Both smokers and non-smokers' right should be guaranteed.

With the smoking rates increased, health officials have been thinking of ways to lower it. It is the same in the University. Our school also held some campaign, hung the placard, etc. But Do these policy really guarantee and satisfying both smokers & non-smokers?

Last year, our school council has pledged the policy; 'Smokers + Non-smokers'. Part of this, they pushed ahead with smoking booth. Smoking booth is the box that smokers can smoke in it. With only meaningless discussion, school council didn't get any result. And also the pledge 'Smokers +Non smokers' was fogged.

All area within the school is non-smoking section. But most students don’t know about this and keep smoking in school. Prohibiting smoking and applying sanction to who smoke within the school or acknowledging it and make smoking area for them; School most choose one. But they don’t take any action. As a result of this vague attitude of school, both smokers & non-smokers experience inconvenience.

Other schools make efforts to promote both smokers & non-smoker’s right. For example, Jungang, Korea, Seogang, Donguk University have already installed smoking booth. Junang University designated the smoking area and put the sticker to there and Seogang University also designated 23 smoking area within the school. Although these policies have already been enforced in other school, however, we don’t have any actual plan or policy to guarantee smokers & non-smoker’s rights. Holding anti-smoke campaign is all the efforts that our school did. But most students had never even heard of it. According to the survey, only 4 about in 100 students know about smoking policy in our school, and 78 about in 100 students have complaints about it.

Because of this, there is conflict between smokers and non-smokers. “I don’t like a whiff of smoke. But when I scoured in school, I cannot help breathing passive smoking. It’s very unpleasant.” said Kim, a senior of business school. But smokers also have something to say. “I don’t want to cause harm to the people too. But there is nowhere to smoke in our school and our school has no idea of guaranteeing our rights.” said Lee, a freshman of business school.”

I think our school should get interested in this problem and do efforts to solve it. But our school seems to have no interest about this. So student’s role is important. We have to require our rights and make the school be heard of our voice. Other school had already showed how to treat this problem and ameliorated the situation. Installing smoking booth, designating smoking area must be enforced first. Because it is most easy way to ensure both smokers and non smoker’s right. Being separated from smokers, non-smokers don’t breathe passive smoking anymore. And smokers don’t need to find somewhere to smoke and smoke comfortable.

Otherwise, above mentioning, most students don’t know about our school’s policy. If the school hold the campaign or do any action, it should be noticed to students. Although the great campaign held, it is no use if the students don’t know about it.

Seeing other schools or government policies, guaranteeing both smokers & non smoker’s rights is current trend. But most students think that our school gets left behind in this trend. If we do efforts together, our right will ensure and the situation will change.
